FIA WTCC NEWSLETTER # 28 – 25 August 2006
MAURER MOTORSPORT JOIN WTCC IN BRNO
Switzerland-based team Maurer Motorsport will run their two
Chevrolet Lacetti cars in the next FIA WTCC event at Brno.
The team is currently commited to the German ADAC Procar
series; after having claimed the championship last year with
Matthias Schläppi in an MG ZS, they switched to Chevrolet
for the 2006 season. Their drivers, Vincent Radermecker from
Belgium and Rainer Bastuck from Germany, are placed first
and fourth in the points respectively with only four rounds
left in the season.
Both drivers will be racing in the WTCC event at Brno and
both will receive a 20-kg automatic handicap weight as per
art. 79 a) of the FIA WTCC Sporting Regulations.
GEIPEL RACES IN BRNO WITH A TOYOTA COROLLA
Young German driver Philip Geipel will make his FIA WTCC
debut at Brno. Geipel, 19- years old from Plauen, will be
at the wheel of a TFS-Yaco Racing Team Toyota Corolla TSport,
the very same car he regularly races in the German ADAC Procar
Series. In his third car racing season, Geipel is currently
lying third in the ADAC Procar’s Division 1, having
claimed five podium results.
As a new driver to join the championship, Geipel will be
imposed a 20-kg automatic handicap weight as per art. 79 a)
of the FIA WTCC Sporting Regulations. This participation has
been authorized by the Touring Car Bureau, as the Toyota Corolla
has only a national homologation, issued by the German ASN.
GR ASIA: A NEW LEÓN FOR MAURIZIO CERESOLI
GR Asia driver Maurizio Ceresoli will switch to a brand new
SEAT Sport-built SEAT León car from the meeting in
Brno. The young Italian driver – who is currently placed
fifth in the Yokohama Independents Trophy – has raced
a SEAT Toledo Cupra so far this season, whereas his team-mate
Tom Coronel switched to the León from the second event,
at Magny-Cours.
“Maurizio has shown consistent progress throughout
the season, and I think that the new car will be a terrific
motivation for him,” team manager Paul Ridgway said.
EXTRA TEST SESSION FOR WTCC IN BRNO
The FIA has authorized a private 30-minute test session on
Friday, September 1st, at 4.00 PM local time. The session
was approved by the WTCC Bureau to give teams the possibility
to check their cars after the trip from Mexico to Europe.
A PHOTO EXHIBITION TO PROMOTE THE WTCC EVENT
The WTCC Race of Czech Republic is supported by the Tourism
Office of the Czech Republic.
A number of promotional activities have been set up to introduce
the race meeting to the Czech fans. The most important one
is the photographic exibition “After the green light
and behind the finish line” that takes place at Brno’s
Olympia shopping mall from August 21st to September 3rd. The
exhibition consists of 60 spectacular pictures covering WTCC,
WRC and other motorsport events, all of them taken by Czech
journalist Martin Straka. A Chevrolet Lacetti WTCC racing
car is also exhibited at the Olympia mall. The exhibition
is open to the public every day from 9.00 AM to 10.00 PM.
