FedCup Semifinal venues announced
The venues for this year’s Fed Cup by BNP Paribas semifinal
matches between Russia and USA, and China and Spain, to be
played on 26-27 April, have been announced.
The Russian Tennis Federation has chosen the Luzhniki Stadium
in Moscow to host the showdown between defending champion
Russia and USA. This will be the third time in four years
that the two nations have met in the semifinals.
Last year’s semifinal took place in Stowe, USA where
the Russians came out on top 3-2 while in 2005 the two teams
played at the Olympic Stadium in Moscow, with victory going
to the home team. Despite these recent results USA leads the
headto- head standings 4-2, having last beaten the Russians
in the final in 1999.
China, who came through a tough first round encounter against
France, will contest its first ever World Group semifinal
when it meets Spain at home. The tie will take place at the
International Tennis Centre in Beijing, in what will be a
boost for the country’s tennis players ahead of the
Olympics. China and Spain have not played each other since
their last meeting in 1984 on clay in Brazil where China won
2-1 in the consolation event.
