Indian Tennis Sensation Sania Mirza to play in DFS Classic
The LTA is pleased to announce that Indian tennis sensation
Sania Mirza will return to Birmingham this summer to take
part in the 25th DFS Classic. Mirza, who was beaten in last
year’s event by eventual finalist Jelena Jankovic, rocketed
to fame in 2005 when she won her first WTA singles title in
Hyderabad to the delight of the Indian crowd and finished
the year inside the world’s top 50.
2006 has seen the Indian star win a second tour doubles title
of her career in Bangalore, partnered by Liezel Huber and
in April the pair reached the final of the doubles event at
Amelia Island. Mirza’s best singles result of the year
came at Indian Wells in March when she reached the third round
taking eventual runner up Elena Dementieva to three sets.
Mirza also collected the prestigious ‘Newcomer of the
Year Award’ at the ‘Stars for Stars’ in
March of this year at the Official Awards Party of Professional
Tennis. The was the second annual joint ATP and Sony Ericsson
WTA Awards ceremony honoured tennis’ finest players
for their 2005 achievements.
DFS Classic tournament Director Marjory Howie stated: “Sania
was a tremendously popular player in 2005 and we are delighted
to welcome her back again this year where I have no doubt
that she will be received with similar enthusiasm. The DFS
Classic is proving yet again to be very popular with the world’s
top female tennis stars and will provide spectators with a
week of top quality tennis.”
The DFS Classic will be played at the Edgbaston Priory Club,
June 10-18 2006. This year’s qualifying event will run
between Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th June 2006 with the main
draw played between 12th and 18th June.
