WORLD NUMBER ONE MAURESMO ENTERS THE HASTINGS DIRECT INTERNATIONAL
CHAMPIONSHIPS
Hastings Direct International Championships’ organisers
announced today that the world number one and current Australian
Open Champion Amelie Mauresmo will be returning this year
to Devonshire Park, Eastbourne between 17 and 24 June (Box
Office 01323 412 000).
Mauresmo has had an impressive 2006 after winning her maiden
Grand Slam event in Melbourne Australia. She then went on
to pick up a further two titles in Paris and Antwerp taking
her career singles total to 22. In March of this year she
regained her world number one status which she last held back
in September 2004. She also became the fastest woman to earn
$1 million in a season at Antwerp (February), bettering previous
record-holder Justine Henin-Hardenne's time in 2004 by one
month.
Mauresmo joins defending Champion Kim Clijsters, Daniela
Hantuchova, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Elena Likhovtseva, Anna Chakvetadze
and Tatiana Golovin so far, as entrants to the Championships.
She will look to improve on her best performance in Eastbourne
where she reached the 2004 semi final, losing to Daniela Hantuchova.
Joint Championships Director, Gavin Fletcher, welcomed the
news of Amelie’s entry into this year’s Championships:
“We are absolutely delighted to welcome back Amelie
to the Hastings Direct International Championships as the
current number one player in the world. It is fantastic to
add another top five player into the main draw with Kim Clijsters
already confirmed.”
