BEECHER ANNOUNCES GB FED CUP SQUAD
Elena Baltacha, Anne Keothavong, Katie O’Brien and
Claire Curran were today named in the Great Britain squad
for the upcoming Europe/Africa Zone Group I Fed Cup matches
in Plovdiv, Bulgaria (week commencing 17th April).
Great Britain will compete against 16 other nations including
Belarus, Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Israel,
Luxembourg, Netherlands, Romania, Serbia & Montenegro,
Slovak Republic, Slovenia, South Africa, Sweden and Ukraine
to determine who will be promoted to the World Group II Play-offs
in July.
For Claire Curran the tie will mark her debut in the GB Fed
Cup squad.
Colin Beecher who will captain the side for the first time
commented. ‘I am delighted to be able to pick a squad
of players who are in excellent form and who will be hugely
excited at representing their country in the Fed Cup.’
Beecher added, ‘Elena has shown tremendous spirit in
coming back from illness and injury and Anne’s recent
form will give the team a huge boost. Claire’s outstanding
recent doubles results will give the team an important extra
dimension. The week in Bulgaria will be a tough test against
some difficult opponents, however the squad is full of confidence
and very much looking forward to the challenge.’
The matches will take place at TC Lokomotiv in Plovdiv, Bulgaria
on outdoor red clay courts.
