Hong Kong Casualty
Hong Kong’s Zhang Rui was the one casualty amongst
the leading players in the qualification stage of the singles
events at the Erke Qatar Open in Doha on Wednesday 19th March
2008.
The second highest world ranked player in the initial stage
of proceedings, she lost to Turkey’s in form Hu Melek,
who remained unbeaten to emerge as the group winner; Zhang
Rui finished in third place having lost to Russian teenager,
Elena Troshneva on the opening day.
However, there were no great problems for Croatia’s
Tamara Boros, Singapore’s Feng Tianwei and Wang Chen
of the United States.
All three finished the group stage of the schedule unbeaten.
Tamara Boros, the highest world ranked female player on duty
in the initial stage of proceedings, completed her schedule
with victory over Korea’s Jun Hyun Sil, whilst the third
and fourth highest listed players, Feng Tianwei and Wang Chen,
recorded respective wins over Hungary’s Rita Kertai
and Korea’s Park Young Suk.
Meanwhile, in the qualification stage of the Men’s
Singles event it was experience that counted with the highest
four world ranked men all progressing unhindered.
The Koreans Kim Jung Hoon, Yoon Jae Young and Lim Jae Hyun
plus Japan’s Seiya Kishikawa all enjoyed success.
Kim Jung Hoon concluded his group programme of matches with
victory over Austria’s Stefan Fegerl whilst Yoon Jae
Young defeated Kuwait’s Ibrahim Al-Hasan. In similar
vein, Lim Jae Hyun accounted for Turkey’s Irfan Tavukcuoglu
and Seiya Kishikawa ended the hopes of Korea’s Seo Young
Gyun.
