Top Two Men’s Singles Seeds Depart
Singapore’s Gao Ning and Chinese Taipei’s Chuan
Chih-Yuan, seeded numbers one and two respectively in the
Men’s Singles event at the Brazil Open in Belo Horizonte,
both departed proceedings in the opening round on Friday 18th
April 2008.
Gao Ning lost in seven games to Korean teenager Lee Sang
Su, who had secured his place in the main draw as being the
one “Lucky Loser” drawn from the second placed
players in the qualification group stage, whilst Chuan Chih-Yuan
was beaten in four straight games by Russia’s Alexei
Liventsov.
It was for the Russian a complete change in fortunes; at
the Slovenian Open in January; he had suffered a four straight
games defeat at the hands of Chuan Chih-Yuan in the third
round of the Men’s Singles event.
Defeats for the top two seeds and also for a further five
seeds in the opening round.
Japan’s Kenji Matsudaira overcame Spain’s seventh
seeded He Zhi Wen, Korea’s Jeong Sang Eun defeated Kai
Yoshida of Japan, the number eight seed whilst Portugal’s
Marcos Freitas recovered from a three games to nil deficit
to defeat sixth seed, Croatia’s Zoran Primorac.
Not to be overshadowed, Japan’s Hidetoshi Oya ousted
twelfth seed Sharath Kamal Achanta and Emmanuel Lebesson of
France ended the hopes of Korea’s Yoon Jae Young.
Seven seeds departed in the first round of the Men’s
Singles event but in the opening round of the Women’s
Singles competition it was quite the reverse; only sixteenth
seeded Mariany Nonaka of Brazil suffered defeat. She lost
to the Japanese defender, Japan’s Yuka Ishigaki.
The top four seeds on the Women’s Singles event, Singapore’s
Wang Yue Gu and Li Jia Wei plus Hong Kong’s Jiang Huajun
and Tie Yana progressed with hindrance to the second round
beating Brazilian adversaries in the respective guises of
Claudia Ikeizumi, Livia Mizobuchi, Jessica Yamada and Karin
Fukushima.
Meanwhile, in the Men’s Singles event, defending champion
and number three seed Japan’s Kan Yo and fourth seed
Hong Kong’s Tang Peng both overcame French opposition
in round one.
Kan Yo defeated Adrien Mattenet whilst Tang Peng accounted
for Sebastien Jover.
