The Fashion Contest on the occasion of the Women’s World Cup in Chengdu, China, showed the next decade in how table tennis players might look when entering the arena.
“At the moment the women look like men when they are playing table tennis!” LU Kun, one of China’s top fashion designers, said. “The clothes they wear are not feminine, they are not sexy and they not show off the female silhouette”, he continued. “They are athletes they are fit, that fitness needs to be emphasised in their clothing.”

Delighted Sponsor
The event got a good feedback by photographers and the media, when some thirty innovative designs were on display. No wonder that Philip KAHN, the Manager of Sponsorship Activities for Volkswagen in China, spent a happy evening. “I’m very pleased with the reaction that we have received to the Fashion Show”, he said. “The governing bodies have supported us, as have the manufacturers whilst there had also been a great deal of interest from the media.”

What about the Players?
“In Chengdu it was the first step”, KAHN continued. “Now, at the Volkswagen Pro Tour Grand Finals in Beijing in December 2007, I want to see the players wearing these new designs, designs that lift the image of table tennis.”
Some players already sent out some positive signals about different clothing and are fed up of the “baggy look” of the styles nowadays. Even though not everybody wants to wear fitted tops and sexy clothes, the Volkswagen Fashion Show displayed clear the endless possibilities on offer. Now it is the turn of the manufacturers to use the verve of Chengdu.
