BRITS BEAT CANADA TO SILVER IN MADRID
British Divers Monique McCarroll and Sarah Barrow have claimed
the first medal of the FINA Diving Grand Prix taking silver
in the women's Platform synchro.
Competing in Madrid, McCarroll (Southampton) and Barrow (Plymouth)
showed consistency and maturity throughout the rounds to keep
up with the Chinese and Canadians.
They lay in third place until the third round where they
pulled out an excellent inward three and a half tuck to go
just ahead of the Canadian pair of Emily Heymans and Marie
Eve Marleau. With the gold medal already secured by the Chinese
pair (Hao Wang and Li Kang) with 352.56 points, the Canadians
and Brits were left to fight it out for the silver.
Heymans and Marleau dropped points in their final two dives
which left the way clear for Britain's McCarroll and Barrow
to take the silver medal with a very impressive score of 314.70.
Canada took the bronze in 306.30.
In the men's 3m Springboard Ben Swain (City of Sheffield)
and Blake Aldridge (Southampton) competed well in the prelims,
but failed to proceed to the semi-finals. Swain finished in
17th place with 345.10 and Aldridge finished in 13th, just
missing out on a semi-final spot, with 361.80 points.
