DIVERS TAKE GOLD IN STOCKHOLM
Jenny Cowen and Suzanne Collins claimed gold for Britain
as a squad of 11 divers competed at the Arena Diving Champions
Cup at the weekend.
The duo took the title in the 10m Synchro in Stockholm and
with their final dive of a back 2½ somersaults and
1½ twists, finished in front of Italians Tania Cagnotto
and Noemi Batki with a score of 304.70.
Cagnotto represented her country at the Athens Olympics,
with Batki being a medallist in the 3m Springboard at last
years' event. The pair finished with a total of 301.60 with
the bronze medal going to Julia Drozdova and Olga Vintonyak
of Russia with 272.50.
Britain also took silver in the men's 10m Synchro event with
Gareth Jones and Gary Hunt teaming up in what is still a relatively
new partnership.
They finished with a total of 344.20 with the Belarus and
Ukrainian duo's taking the gold and silver medals with 409.68
and 372.00 points respectively. For Jones and Hunt, their
best dive came in round four with a inward 3½ somersault
in a tuck position.
Tonia Couch featured in the final of the women's 10m Platform,
coming fifth with 178.80 and teammate Rebecca Gallantree finished
sixth in the 3m Springboard with a total of 108.00.
Callum Johnstone made the final of the men's 10m Platform
and came sixth with 175.00 points.
The meet would have provided the group with an excellent
opportunity to experience high-performance diving at an international
meet early in the year.
