FOSTER TAKES RECORD AT MASTERS EVENT
Mark Foster put in a superb performance in the 4x50m Freestyle
Relay to set a new World Record at the ASA National Masters
and Senior Age Group Championships (25m) today.
The biggest roar of the day came when Foster took to the
starting blocks to join a team of Chelsea Football Club staff
in the mixed 4x50m Freestyle Relay.
The veteran swimmer set a new World record in the 50m Freestyle
in the 35-39 years age group with a time of 21.53, and was
joined by Simon Greenberg, Emma Wilkenson and Katie Fearne
in the Chelsea and Kensington team for the 120+ years age
group relay.
The quartet came 11th in their age group, touching home in
a time of 1:54.16 with the honours going to Barnet Copthall
who finished in a time of 1:46.83.
For Greenberg and Fearne, these Championships was their first
ever competitive swim and worked alongside Foster and Wilkenson
to enter the relay event.
"Getting involved the Masters Championships was about
participation and proving that you can still be active at
any age and get involved in sport." said Greenberg.
"We've been training at Chelsea and Kensington SC with
Bram Montgomery and Ian Brown, and would like to thank them
both for all their help. Everyone at the club has got behind
us also and sponsored us to raise money for a charity called
Clic Sargent."
Hadrian Masters set a new European record in the 200+ years
age group relay with a time of 1:53.33.
Foster was not the only swimmer to take to the pool and set
a new World standard.
Andrew Manley (Swindon Dolphins) set a new world record in
the 30-34 years 100m Freestyle touching home in 50.24, with
Daniel Coombs (Loughborough University) setting a new British
record in the 18-24 years age group in 50.20. Craig Norrey
set a new British record in the same event 45-49 years in
54.21.
Chris Jones (Swindon Dolphins) set a new World record in
the 25-29 years 200m Breaststroke with a time of 2:14.44,
20 seconds clear of his nearest rival.
Joe Gannon (Stockport Metro) broke the 18-24 years 200m Breaststroke
British record with a time of 2:14.54, with Barry O'Brien
(Oundle) and Geoff Thwaites (Co Cambridge) following in the
same fashion setting a new British and European record in
the 50-54 years (2:40.39) and 60-64 years (2:54.26) respectively.
In the women's 200m Breaststroke, Katie Henderson set a new
British record in the 25-29 years age group with a time of
2:36.60.
Amanda Heath was unlucky not to set a new World Record in
the same event, missing out by less than a second to claim
a new European record. Her time of 2:58.35 was five seconds
quicker than anyone else in her age group, which she is competing
in for the first year.
"I'm reasonably happy with that swim. My main aim coming
into this meet was the 100m Breaststroke, which I broke the
world record for yesterday but all-in-all I pleased with how
things have gone," she said.
Aimee Ramm (GB Police) took two European records for the
25-29 years age group in the 100m Individual Medley (1:06.43)
and the 100m Freestyle (56.98), continuing the fantastic form
displayed so far.
Lesley Wilde (Co Oxford) took a European and a British record
in the 45-49 years age group.
The first came in the 400m Individual Medley when she touched
home in 5:31.00 to set a new European standard, with her British
record coming six events later in the 50m Backstroke (33.27).
Cassie Patten (Stockport Metro) took the British record in
the 400m Individual Medley (18-24 years) with a time of 4:46.88,
finishing 25m clear of the swimmer how came second in her
heat. She also took the British record in the 400m Freestyle
event with a time of 4:10.39.
The 400m I.M event marked the end to the world open water
silver medallist's campaign, and she can be happy with the
results and times she achieved.
"I came into this meet after being in heavy training
and to come within 1.5 seconds of my personal best times in
all events I have swam in is great," she said.
"This is a really enjoyable meet to come to and I'm
happy with the shape I'm in as I look towards the rest of
the season."
