OFFSHORE BOYS DOMINATE AUSSIE OPEN WATER
A group of talented British swimmers undergoing a swimming
and academic education in Australia dominated a state open
water championships winning three gold and two silver.
British Swimming's Offshore Centre at The Southport School
is home to some of the nation's greatest male swimming prospects
and they continued to impress on Sunday as they switched their
attentions from the pool to open water.
Lake Kawana on the Sunshine Coast provided the first experience
of open water swimming for many of the group, which is undergoing
development ahead of 2012, yet mature performances from the
teenagers saw three victories from the four male events.
Offshore Centre new boys Roberto Pavoni (Brentwood) and Tom
Parris (Hastings and Crawley) finished with gold and silver
respectively in the 16 Years 5km event in 1:00:25 and 1:01.30.
Stockport Metro's James Cowburn narrowly missed out on the
bronze in a sprint finish and he finished fourth in 1:01.48,
Adam Harrington (Crawley) was seventh in 1:02:35, Luke Wood
(Salford) was eighth in 1:02:47, and Richard Butler (Kingston-upon-Hull)
took ninth spot in 1:03:31.
Richard Charlesworth (Hatfield) took the gold in the 17-18
Years 10km event in a time of 1:55:39, Chris Walker-Hebborn
(Ipswich) won gold in the shorter 5km distance in 58:41 with
silver going to Jamie Broom (Deventio, Derby) in 59:30.
Adam Brown (Hatfield) was fourth home in 1:01:30, Grant Turner
(University of Bath) was sixth in 1:02:32, James Doolan (Salford)
finished just behind in 1:02:37 in seventh and Marco Loughran
(Guildford City) was ninth in 1:08:36.
In the Men's 10km event Chris Alderton (Wear Valley) finished
eighth in 2:02:29.
Southport on the Gold Coast offers an attractive proposition
to any young male swimmer looking to continue their education
while giving entirely to the sport.
A 10-lane, 50m pool and an eight-lane 25m pool - both heated,
floodlit and outdoor - offer unparalleled access and the group
is guided by Chris Nesbit who has coached swimmers to world
