SWIMMERS START SEASON AT WORLD CUP MEET
A small British swim squad will kick off its winter training
camp tomorrow with competition at the FINA World Cup meet
in Sydney.
The squad of 14, which arrived in Sydney earlier this week
at the start of a six-week warm weather training camp, will
face Australia's best as well as top athletes from 23 countries
in their first competitive outing of the season.
More than 250 swimmers will take part in the two-day short-course
meet, which forms the third leg of the FINA series.
The meet provides Britain's athletes with their first opportunity
to race since the summer's long course meets and the chance
to test their speed since returning to training in September.
And having only arrived in Australia two days ago, the competition
will also test the British contingent's ability to recover
from jet lag and perform through fatigue.
Competition kicks off tomorrow (2 November) at the Sydney
Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. British athletes competing are
as follows:
Kirsty Balfour (City of Edinburgh)
Julia Beckett (Loughborough University)
Chris Cook (City of Newcastle)
Ellen Gandy (Beckenham)
Kris Gilchrist (City of Edinburgh)
Fransesca Halsall (City of Liverpool)
Kate Haywood (Loughborough University)
Joanne Jackson (Derwentside)
Caitlin McClatchey (Loughborough University)
Hannah Miley (Garioch)
Elizabeth Simmonds (Lincoln Vulcans)
Gregor Tait (City of Edinburgh)
Liam Tancock (Loughborough University)
Chris Watkinson (Loughborough University/Braintree)
