SIMMONDS SETS NEW RECORD ON WAY TO GOLD
Swimmers Liam Tancock and Lizzie Simmonds continued to shine
in Sydney with another gold each on the final day' of the
Australian leg of the FINA World Cup where the British team
closed their account with 10 medals.
Simmonds set a new British Record of 58.14 on the way to
gold in the 100m Backstroke (short course) and finished just
ahead of Australian's Sophie Erdington on 58.29 and Belinda
Hocking on 58.75.
Tancock continues to impress in the individual medley and
won the 200m event in 1:56.93 from Dean Kent of New Zealand
in 1:57.43 and Australian Leith Brodie in 1:57.45.
Hannah Miley also medalled for the second time in two days
when she took the silver in a new British Record time of 4:33.00
in the 400m Individual Medley. Gold went to Stephanie Rice
of Australia in 4:32.63 and Julie Hjorth-Hounsen of Denmark
took the bronze in 4:36.32.
There was further success for Kirsty Balfour who took the
bronze in the 200m Breaststroke. Favourite Leisel Jones was
an impressive winner in 2:20.84 and team mate Sally Foster
grabbed silver in 2:24.63 while Balfour was just behind in
2:25.03.
Chris Cook added a bronze to the British tally in the Men's
100m Breaststroke with a time of 1:00.04. Australian's Christian
Sprenger in 58.71 and Brenton Rickard in 58.95 took gold and
silver respectively.
In the Men's 200m Backstroke American Randall Bal took the
honours in 1:51.78, Russian Arkady Vyatchanin won silver in
1:54.20 and Britain's Gregor Tait took the bronze in 1:55.22
to ensure Britain's tally reached double figures.
