BRITAIN OFF TO GOLD WINNING START

British swimmers Liam Tancock and Lizzie Simmonds won gold in Sydney to start their competitive season strongly at the Australian leg of the FINA World Cup series (Short Course).

Double World Championship medallist Tancock (Loughborough University) set a new British record in the heats of the 100m Individual Medley and then lowered it once more on his way to winning gold in the final in a time of 53.71.

Australians Leith Brodie in 54.00 and Adam Lucas in 55.37 took silver and bronze respectively and in doing so pushed out Britain's Gregor Tait (City of Edinburgh) into fourth in a time of 55.79.

European Junior Champion Simmonds (Lincoln Vulcans) continued to impress in her transition to the senior ranks and was a convincing winner of the 200m Backstroke in 2:05.21. Meagen Nay of Australia took the silver in 2:06.65 while her team mate Tayliah Zimmer secured the bronze in 2:07.82.

Britain took four medals from day one of the competition with a silver and bronze also added to the ranks along with three Scottish Records.

Ellen Gandy (Beckenham) took silver in the 100m Butterfly in a time of 59.36. Gold went to Australia's Felicity Galvez in 57.63 and Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden took the bronze in 59.47. Fran Halsall (City of Liverpool) was fifth in 59.82.

Jo Jackson (Derwentside) grabbed the bronze in the Women's 800m Freestyle in a time of 8:28.16 while Kylie Palmer of Australia won the gold in 8:15.96 while Yurie Yano of Japan took silver in 8:26.14.

Hannah Miley (Garioch) bettered the Scottish Record for the 200m IM twice in the heats and final and swam 2:11.92 to take fourth place with gold going to Stephanie Rice of Australia in 2:10.88.

British team mate Cailtin McClatchey (Loughborough University) also set a Scottish Record in the heats of the 200m Freestyle when she went 1:57.52. However, McClatchey was unable to improve on that in the final when she finished seventh.

City of Newcastle's Chris Cook finished just out of the medals in the Men's 50m Breaststroke when he came home fourth in 27.60. Gold went to Christian Sprenger in 27.12.
