HELP SOUGHT TO SHAPE FUTURE OF SCHOOL SWIMMING
The Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) is asking the public
to get involved in its largest ever consultation on school
swimming in England. The public consultation on the national
governing body's proposed School Swimming Strategy will help
to guide the ASA's role in supporting school swimming in England
and all responses must be received by Saturday 9th June. It
aims to gather the opinions and views of a cross-section of
people and will help determine the ASA's involvement. The
Institute of Sport and Recreation Management (ISRM), Royal
Life Saving Society (RLSS), Youth Sport Trust and Association
for Physical Education have already been consulted on the
school swimming strategy but the ASA now hopes to gain valuable
feedback from the wider school swimming community to ensure
all views are considered. The 2007 ASA School Swimming Strategy
will be aligned to the ASA's main strategies and the Department
for Education and Skills (DfES) Charter for School Swimming.
It aims to support Game Plan - the strategy for delivering
Government's sport and physical activity objectives as well
as the existing national agenda for swimming.
The draft strategy will look to maximise opportunities throughout
all levels of swimming for all school pupils. It will aim
to break down the barriers of participation for children.
Through the wider agenda, it also hopes to promote good health
practice in young people, contribute to crime reduction, encourage
people from a wider spectrum of social groups to become involved
in swimming, aid community regeneration and promote safe swimming
within pools. Independent organisation, HNI International
Consultants, is undertaking the consultation on behalf of
the ASA and details of individuals taking part will remain
confidential. Respondents are asked to provide feedback on
up to 10 questions, which cover areas such as the National
Curriculum, training requirements, swimmer pathways and school
swimming provision.
ASA PESSCL Manager Jon Glenn believes the more people that
provide feedback on the draft strategy the better the final
strategy will be.
"So many people are involved in school swimming provision
that we want to cast the net as far as possible to make sure
we get maximum input into the strategy," he said. "This
consultation is a chance for all people involved in school
swimming to have their say on our proposed strategy and school
swimming as a whole. "The ASA is committed to ensuring
all school children have the opportunity to learn to swim
and through programmes like Top Ups we are getting closer
to achieving that goal. By ensuring as many people as possible
are consulted in our strategy we can ensure a plan is developed
in the best interests of everyone involved in school swimming
in England."
Comments and suggestions will be fed into the strategy and
a delivery plan will be produced later in the year. For queries

consultation, please email enquiries@hnicons.co.uk . All responses
should be emailed to info@hnicons.co.uk
