ASA DEVELOPMENT OFFICER ELECTED TO EURO SPORTS COMMITTEE
An Amateur Swimming Association Development Officer has been
elected to a European sports committee.
Yvette Heywood took up the position as member of the European
Non-Governmental Sports Organisations (ENGSO) Youth Committee
to share good practice examples and discuss the grass roots
development of sports within European member states.
ENGSO Youth was established in 2003 with the aim of giving
people under the age of 35 the chance to be represented on
a European level. All members have experience of youth sport
issues and a keen interest in developing youth sports across
Europe.
Representing The Central Council of Physical Recreation (CCPR),
Heywood went through a nomination and election process to
gain her place on the ENGSO Youth committee.
At the recent four day meeting Heywood was involved within
discussions about how to give more young people the opportunity
to participate within sports and setting up individual youth
committees.
Amateur Swimming Association's Schools Competition Development
Officer and Volunteer Manager Yvette Heywood believes there
are important lessons to be learnt about sport development
from other European countries.
"It is a real honour to have been elected onto the youth
committee," she said. "It is great that swimming
is represented in a European environment. We can learn a lot
from different countries and it is important that we take
advantage of all of the opportunities to develop."
"It is good to understand where European funding is
going and gives us the chance to be at the forefront of European
decision making."
Heywood is looking forward to the prospect of further development
from future meetings.
"I believe that it is great news for the future of sports
to give young people a say on how they want sports developing
and this can only lead to more people taking part," she
said.
