OLYMPIC HOPEFULS INVITED TO TRAIN AT SOUTHPORT
Britian's Offshore Centre is looking for senior British swimmers
to join the programme on the Gold Coast where they will be
able to enjoy unparalleled access to outdoor 50m facilities
in preparation for next summer's Olympics.
The Southport School also provides warm-weather training
for Britain and has been the venue of final preparation camps
ahead of the Commonwealth Games last year as well the World
Championships later this month.
Offshore Centre Head Coach Chris Nesbit is now looking to
recruit UK Sport funded athletes to the venue which he views
as being able to make a real difference to an athlete's preparation
for next summer's Olympic Games in Beijing.
"The facilities and the weather we enjoy at The Southport
School are second to none. What we're looking to do is to
provide an opportunity for a small group of athletes to enjoy
this environment so they can focus totally on their Olympic
preparations," said Nesbit.
"In the past 12 months the entire group have missed
just three training sessions between them. Compare this to
similar sized groups in Britain and this could well be over
a 100 because of the differences in climate.
"In an Olympic year an athlete can't afford to have
time out of the pool. It's about the training that is done
over the next 12months that will make a difference in Beijing
and the Offshore Centre offers better odds that that preparation
will be uninterrupted."
