DIVING PAIR FORCED TO WITHDRAW AS INJURY STRIKES
Britain's divers suffered further injury and heartache when
the Men's 3m Synchro team were forced to withdraw from the
event on day one of the World Championships in Melbourne due
to a sprained ankle.
Nick Robinson-Baker (City of Sheffield) twisted his ankle
dry-land training yesterday in preparation for today's event
at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre and will spend
the next two weeks on crutches.
It's a bitter blow for Robinson-Baker, his synchro partner
Ben Swain and the British team who are currently suffering
with three other injuries to divers.
National Performance Director Steve Foley and his team of
coaches and medical staff now face the unusual task of getting
the remaining divers mentally prepared given such a run of
bad luck that started in January with Tony Ally's (City of
Sheffield) withdrawal due to a ruptured knee ligament.
"We're suffering a really bad run of injuries at the
moment but our priority now is to make sure the rest of the
guys are mentally ready to compete," said Foley.
"Nick twisted his ankle in training and we x-rayed as
a precaution. Thankfully there's no break but it's going to
be a long process to get him right and it won't happen in
Melbourne.
"It was an immediate decision to withdraw on the advice
of the team physio. It's just really unfortunate as the guys
were looking really good coming into the event."
