BRITAIN'S WOMEN GET OFF TO WINNING START
Great Britain's women's water polo team got off to a winning
start at the European B Championships in Prague yesterday.
Taking on Turkey in their opening group match, Britain soon
took control and ended the first quarter 6-0 up against their
rivals.
The team's dominance continued into the second quarter, scoring
10 goals, with the Turks only able to respond with one goal.
At the halfway point Britain had an insurmountable 16-1 lead,
but the team continued to perform with a strong desire to
win, taking the third quarter 8-0 and the final quarter 3-2
for a 27-3 win.
The squad of 13 is currently reaping the benefits of a new
training regime with Hungarian Szilveszter Fekete. The new
women's Head Coach has been working with the squad to help
the sport move forward ahead of the London 2012 Olympics.
The tournament provides the squad with an opportunity to
play together after what has been an intense period of training
that kicked off with Fekete's arrival earlier this year.
Britain take on pre-tournament favourites France this evening
(Wednesday), take on their final Group B opponents Slovakia
on Thursday.
Britain's men will contest for honours on home soil at the
LEN European Nations Trophy, Manchester when 12 squads from
across the continent battle it out for the honours at the
eight-day event from 8th-15th July.
Tickets are on sale and cost as little as £5 per day.
