WATERFIELD FORCED TO WITHDRAW FROM GRAND PRIX
British Diving's Peter Waterfield has been forced to sit
out the German leg of the FINA Grand Prix this weekend after
suffering a rib injury in training. The 26-year-old Southampton
diver popped a rib in training last week while performing
a dive off the 3m springboard and now faces four weeks out
of the water as he looks to recuperate. "There's nothing
for me to do but rest at the moment," said Waterfield.
"I'm aiming to keep fit and I can still use certain weights
and fitness programmes but I need to stay away from diving
until it heals. "It's painful to dive at the moment so
it's a no go in that regard but I'm just glad it's this year
and not in 12months' time when I'll be preparing for the Beijing
Olympics. "I'm disappointed not to be competing in Germany
but my main concern at the moment is trying to get myself
fit for the ASA Diving Championships in Sheffield next month
(6th to 8th July)." An eight-strong British squad will
take part in the Rostock event, the final leg of the Grand
Prix, from 22nd-24th June.
British athletes have already competed in China, Canada,
the U.S., Italy and Spain. The Grand Prix provides them with
the opportunity to compete against world-class divers and
gain more experience on the international stage as the sport
prepares for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Divers will battle
it out in the 3m Springboard, 10m Platform, 3m Synchro and
the 10m Synchro over the three days of competition.
