THREE MEDALS CLAIMED ON FINAL DAY OF COMPETITION
The final day of the Seven Hills meet in Rome saw Britain's
swimmers claim three medals to take their medal tally to 14
throughout the weekend.
The heats of the women's 200m freestyle saw four of Britain's
top swimmers make the top seven to compete in the final. Caitlin
McClatchey (Loughborough University), Mel Marshall (Loughborough
University), Jo Jackson (Derwentside) and Fran Halsall (City
of Liverpool) all looked strong in the morning heats and were
looking to continue their form in the final.
McClatchey went out strong from the start to take the lead
and continued to dominate the race ahead of her British team-mates.
She claimed gold and her second medal of the competition in
a time of 1:58.70 seconds.
Marshall claimed 4th place in 1:59.73, Jackson took 6th in
2:00.38 and Halsall finished in 7th place in 2:00.88.
Loughborough University's Liam Tancock qualified fastest
for the 200m individual medley in a time of 2:03.09. James
Goddard (Loughborough University) and Euan Dale (Loughborough
University) qualified in third and fifth place respectively.
The final saw an excellent swim from Tancock in which he
took the lead from the start and controlled the race; he finished
in a time of 2:01.81 claiming his first gold and his third
medal of the competition.
Goddard performed solidly to take 5th place with a time of
2:03.33 and Dale took 6th spot in 2:03.38.
The 200m breaststroke event saw Kate Haywood (Loughborough
University) claim her third medal in the competition with
an impressive swim in the final.
Qualifying 6th fastest in the heats Haywood went into the
final looking to improve on her time. She fought hard in the
final to take third spot and a personal best time of 2:31.23
seconds.
Head Coach Ian Turner is pleased with the results from this
weekend's competition.
"This weekend we have seen a number of good solid performances
on the back of a lot of hard work from the swimmers,"
he said. "As a whole the team has performed well. The
swimmers were competing against some top athletes and we are
pleased with our results.
"We will now be moving onto the training camp in Sardinia.
We are looking to push our athletes hard to see who can prove
that they have what it takes to take on the world at the Beijing
Olympics next year."
