THREE MEDALS CLAIMED ON FIRST DAY OF COMPETITION
The seven hills meet opened in Rome seeing impressive performances
from Britain's top swimmers claiming three medals on the first
day of competition.
Britain's first finalist was Liam Tancock (Loughborough University),
who made the final in the Men's 50m Backstroke event with
a strong swim in the morning heats.
Tancock, who went into the final with the fastest time, continued
to show his excellent form finishing in second place in a
time of 25.70 seconds.
Gold went to America's Randall Bal in a new championships
record time of 25.04 seconds.
"I am pleased with my performance today," said
Tancock. "We are in the middle of a tough training period
and it was my fastest time in this phase of training.
"There are improvements that I can make and we will
be looking to work on them in time for the 100m Backstroke
tomorrow."
Teenage sprinter Fran Halsall (City of Liverpool) performed
strongly in the heats to claim her position in the final of
the 100m Butterfly.
Halsall put in an impressive performance in the final and
finished in second place behind Italy's Christina Macagnolia.
Finishing in a time of 1:00.28, Halsall claimed her silver
medal and a personal best time.
In the 100m Breaststroke Kate Haywood (Loughborough University)
claimed Britain's third medal in the pool with a time of 1:09.61
to claim her silver medal. Finishing behind Jade Edmistone
who claimed gold in a time of 1:09.02.
The women's 400m Freestyle event saw three British athletes
through to the final. Jo Jackson (Derwentside) finished in
5th place in a time of 4:13.75, Rebecca Adlington (Nova Centurion)
finished in 6th place in a time of 4:13.76 and Mel Marshall
(Loughborough University) finished in 7th in a time of 4:15.14.
David Carry (Aberdeen Dolphins) and Dean Milwain (Loughborough
University) competed alongside Grant Hackett in the men's
400m Freestyle final. Carry finished in fourth place in 3:52.12,
while Milwain finished 7th in 3:56.65. Hackett took gold in
a time of 3:49.41.
