GET SAFE 4 SUMMER KICKS OFF CAMPAIGN IN SALFORD
The Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) will kick off its
annual Get Safe 4 Summer campaign on 15th June at Salford
Watersports Centre with the help of Olympic bronze medallist
Steve Parry.
Get Safe 4 Summer is the ASA's annual water safety campaign,
which teaches children essential life saving skills and delivers
critical safety messages for them to take home with them when
they visit coastal and inland waters over the summer holidays.
Throughout the day, up to 100 children will be given the
chance to participate in fun activities at four stations set
up throughout the centre, where they will learn CPR techniques,
Reach Rescue (land based), try out the Bell Boat rides and
will be able to participate in Project Oaresome - a scheme
designed to introduce children to rowing.
The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service will be attending
the event to give demonstration of the skills that they use
everyday to save lives.
Run by the ASA in partnership with the Royal Life Saving
Society and the PE, School Sports and Club Links Strategy
(PESSCL), Get Safe 4 Summer is in its fifth year and aims
to reach over 1,400 school children during June and July at
schools and leisure centres.
Get Safe 4 Summer will travel the length and breadth of the
country during June and July, visiting 19 centres in a bid
to teach children vital lifesaving and water safety skills.
Olympic bronze medallist Steve Parry has worked Get Safe
4 Summer for the past three years and will be on hand throughout
the day to help with safety demonstrations, to meet and greet
the children and tell them about his experiences in the water.
"I am looking forward to a fun-filled day," said
Parry. "Get Safe 4 Summer promotes a vital safety message;
too many children in this country die through drowning and
we are aiming to cut this number dramatically.
"Swimming is a great sport to be involved in because
not only does it keep you fit but it can help to save your
life and the lives of others.
Swimming Manager Shelley Whitehead is excited about the launch
and teaching the children some vital lifesaving skills.
"This launch is really important to Salford and the
Watersports Centre," she said. "It will be really
good to see children learning water safety skills whilst having
a great time. Our aim for the day is to teach children to
use water safely and to experience other activities that they
can take part in at an inland water venue.
"We are all looking forward to having Steve at the centre.
He is a great ambassador for the sport and hopefully we can
find him a new water based activity to try."
