DALEY SHOWS PROMISE AT GRAND PRIX MEET
Junior diver Thomas Daley reinforced his status as one of
the country's brightest prospects with a top four finish at
the FINA Diving Grand Prix in Madrid last night.
The youngster, who celebrated his 13th birthday at the end
of last month, was unfazed by world-class senior competition
in the 10m event to record his best ever performance on the
platform.
Daley, of Plymouth Diving Club, received high 9.5 scores
in five of his six preliminary dives to qualify second into
the semi-finals behind Olympic champion Hu Jia of China. Trailing
Jia by just seven points with a score of 480.050, Daley continued
his form into the semi final where he topped the group to
progress into the final ranked number two.
In the fight for bronze Daley was edged off the podium by
Ukranian Kostyantyn Milyayev who overtook the youngster on
the last two dives. Daley was just six points away from a
medal, finishing fourth with a score of 419.700. China's Yang
Liguang won gold with 514.150 points and compatriot Hu Jia
collected silver with 510.250 points.
