DALEY SHOWS PROMISE AT GRAND PRIX MEET

Junior diver Thomas Daley reinforced his status as one of the country's brightest prospects with a top four finish at the FINA Diving Grand Prix in Madrid last night.

The youngster, who celebrated his 13th birthday at the end of last month, was unfazed by world-class senior competition in the 10m event to record his best ever performance on the platform.

Daley, of Plymouth Diving Club, received high 9.5 scores in five of his six preliminary dives to qualify second into the semi-finals behind Olympic champion Hu Jia of China. Trailing Jia by just seven points with a score of 480.050, Daley continued his form into the semi final where he topped the group to progress into the final ranked number two.

In the fight for bronze Daley was edged off the podium by Ukranian Kostyantyn Milyayev who overtook the youngster on the last two dives. Daley was just six points away from a medal, finishing fourth with a score of 419.700. China's Yang Liguang won gold with 514.150 points and compatriot Hu Jia collected silver with 510.250 points.
