SWIMMING CANDIDATE SELECTED FOR IOC COURSE
A British Swimming manager has been formerly selected to
undertake a prestigious International Olympic Committee course
after being nominated by the British Olympic Association.
British Swimming World Class Operations Manager Wendy Lockton
was initially put forward for the course by the governing
body for aquatics before being nominated by the British Olympic
Association as its only candidate for the Executive Masters
in Sport Organisations Management Course (MEMOS).
With only around 30 places available from around the world
of sport, the MEMOS courses are both exclusive and highly
regarded and Lockton will be inducted onto the 12-month training
initiative in September.
Lockton will have to complete four modules as part of the
course that draws on the expertise of a team of professors
as well leaders and professionals from the world of international
sport.
It's a unique chance for Lockton to gain personal development
and to put in to place her new-found skills as part of the
World Class set up within British Swimming.
"It's a fantastic opportunity both for British Swimming
and for me personally," said Lockton. "I will be
learning new skills from some of the world's most intelligent
and experienced sporting professionals and that can only benefit
everyone involved.
"To be able to continue my education and put it into
practice this knowledge as part of my role with British Swimming
is very exciting. As we look to the 2012 London Olympics and
beyond, these new skills will be invaluable as we help to
stage the greatest games in the world.
"It will enable me to put something back into a sport
that I have a real passion for."
The MEMOS mission is to help professionals working in national
or international sports bodies to develop the knowledge required
in order to better manage their organisations.
Lockton will undergo four week-long modules in Lausanne,
Switzerland; Saarbrucken, Germany; Sydney, Australia and concluding
at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne.
Modules to be covered comprise Strategic Management and Sport
Governance, Marketing Management, Human Resource Management
and Performance Management of Sports Organisations
Info
MEMOS was founded in Europe in 1995 upon the initiative of
several National Olympic Committees (NOCs), the European Network
of Sport Sciences in Higher Education, several universities,
and with the financial support of Olympic Solidarity and the
European Union Socrates programme. The aim of MEMOS was to
provide a higher-level training to European sport managers.
Currently, more than 260 MEMOS graduates from almost 115
countries are working for Olympic sports organisations.
