JACKSON SETS NEW BRITISH STANDARD OVER 800M
Distance freestyle swimmer Jo Jackson added another British
Record to her list of honours when she broke the standard
for the 800m short course event and in doing so also set a
new Commonwealth best time.
The 20-year-old Derwentside swimmer went 8:15.50 at the Northumberland
and Durham County Championships in Middlesbrough on Saturday
to better Rebecca Cooke's previous British Record of 8:18.68,
set in 2001, as well as the Commonwealth standard of 8:17.64
held by Australian Amanda Pascoe since 2002.
Jackson, from Richmond, North Yorkshire, already holds the
400m Freestyle British Record, set in the short course pool,
and recorded her latest standard while in heavy training.
Coach Dave McNulty was delighted with a performance that
will give Jackson a lot of confidence as she continues to
prepare for the FINA World Championships in Melbourne next
month.
"It was a great swim by Jo," said McNulty. "She
had trained in the morning, had a short break and then was
in again without a warm up. To set a new time like that, considering
the training she's undergoing, is pretty impressive."
Jackson's swim is subject to ratification.
