GOLD FOR DALEY AND ALDRIDGE IN CANADA
Newly crowned BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year Tom
Daley enhanced his reputation even further when, just hours
after learning of his prize, he and partner Blake Aldridge
won gold in Canada ahead of Olympic and World Championship
medallists.
The 13-year-old Plymouth diver was in action at the CAMO
Invitational Meet in Montreal while his award was announced
at the BBC's annual sports award ceremony in Birmingham and
he channelled his pride at receiving such a prestigious accolade
in perfect fashion.
Daley and new synchro partner Aldridge (Southampton Diving)
dived impressively to score a succession of 9.0s, 9.5s and
even a 10.0 on their way to taking gold in the Men's 10m Synchro
event.
Their achievement, with a score of 440.10, took on even greater
significance given the record of the teams who took the silver
and bronze medals.
British pairing Leon Taylor (City of Sheffield) and Pete
Waterfield (Southampton), who took 10m synchro silver at the
2004 Athens Olympics, faltered on their fourth and fifth dives
to take silver with 432.99 while Americans David Boudia and
Tom Finchum, bronze medallists at the World Championships
this year, took bronze in 429.42.
Daley has been in action in the 10m individual event earlier
in the day and executed one of the best dives of a busy day
in Montreal to draw five scores of 10.0 from the judges.
The teenager eventually finished sixth with 451.90, Aldridge
was fifth with 463.50 while Waterfield made it to the podium
in third place with 471.40. Gold went to Cuba's Jose Antonio
Guerra with 517.75 and Boudia of the U.S. took the silver
with 500.05.
Britain's Sarah Barrow (Plymouth) and Monique McCarroll (Southampton)
took the bronze medal in the Women's 10m Synchro with a score
of 310.20. Gold went to Canadians Marie-Eve Marleu and Emilie
Heymans with 339.93 ahead of Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline
Filion, also of Canada, in 314.40.
