MCCLATCHEY TAKES BRONZE IN JAPAN

Britain's Caitlin McClatchey narrowly missed out on her own British Record when she took the bronze medal in the Women's 400m Freestyle on day one of the Japan International Meet in Chiba.

The Loughborough University swimmer gave a gutsy performance and raced hard all the way to keep within the fight for the medals.

Her time of 4:07.12 was just shy of her best of 4:07.02 and it left McClatchey feeling slightly disappointed despite her podium place.

"I'm feeling a little mixed at the moment," said McClatchey. "It was a good swim but I wanted it to be better and had trained hard to ensure it was.

"It's always nice to win a medal and in such a quality field it feels even better but I wanted a best time, to improve on that British Record and take a couple rivals out in the process.

"If I'd had a better morning swim and an easier lane tonight that may have made a difference but it didn't. I gave it a good go, I had people in my sights and a time in my head but I was just shy of those."

Gold went to Australia's Bronte Barratt in 4:05.93 and Otylia Jedrzejczak took silver in 4:06.27. Britain's Rebecca Cooke (City of Glasgow) also went in the final and finished sixth in 4:11.32.

A Scottish record fell when Kris Gilchrist (City of Edinburgh) set a new best time in the final of the Men's 100m Breaststroke.

A delighted Gilchrist, who normally applies himself to the 200m distance, finished sixth in 1:01.47 ahead of Darren Mew (University of Bath) in seventh with 1:01.62.

Gold went to favourite Kosuke Kitajima of Japan in 59:73 with Christian Sprenger of Australia taking silver while Jon Roberts of the U.S. grabbed bronze.

In the Women's 400m Individual Medley Hannah Miley (Garioch) finished fifth in 4:42.17, David Davies (City of Cardiff) was fifth in the Men's 400m Freestyle in a time of 3:49.80 - just outside of his personal best - and in the Women's 100m Breaststroke Kate Haywood led the Brits home in fifth (1:08.73) with Kirsty Balfour in sixth (1:08.95).
