FINA ANNOUNCE MANCHESTER PRIZE FUND

FINA has announced a US$500,000 prize fund for the 2008 World Championships (25m) in Manchester.

The world governing body for aquatics has pledged an impressive US$2.5 million in prize money over the next two years, with the World Championships in Melbourne (Australia) in March 2007 receiving US$2 million to split across swimming, diving, synchronised swimming, water polo and open water swimming.

FINA executive director Cornel Marculescu unveiled the funds at the federation ' s inaugural World Conference taking place in Madrid.

British Swimming chief executive David Sparkes welcomed the injection of cash to the event.

" To have such a large prize fund made available for the World Championships is a massive boost for Manchester, " he said. " It will help to draw the top swimmers in the world to contest for honours at the MEN Arena which will provide a real showcase for swimming in this country and a great rehearsal for the London Olympics. "

The 2008 World Championships (25m) are scheduled to take place in Manchester from 9-13th April.
