INFECTION FORCES DAVIES OUT OF THE WATER
Olympic, World and Commonwealth medallist David Davies faces
a frustrating period out of the water as the swimmer recovers
from a foot infection and subsequent surgery.
The 21-year-old distance freestyler has undergone a routine
operation on a swollen left ankle and should be consigned
to the poolside for three to four weeks.
Doctors treating Davies believe the infection had been dormant
in his body for some weeks before becoming apparent at the
end of a busy period of training and competition.
It comes as a setback to Davies who was in the middle of
preparations for this summer's European Championships in Budapest
(26 July - 6 August) after qualifying for the British squad.
Davies hopes to resume land training next week before assessing
when he'll be able to return to the water.
"It's really frustrating to be sidelined but I'm staying
positive," said Davies. "It could have been much
worse if I hadn't had it seen to when I did - the pain was
pretty unbearable!
"The timing could have been worse too as the World Championships
are in March next year and the Olympic Games the year after
that - the two major competitions for me.
"I will miss being in the pool but will keep fit on
land with my foot in a cast for the time being."
