DIVERS TO MEET CANADIAN CHALLENGE
Commonwealth medallists Peter Waterfield, Tandi Indergaard
and Hayley Sage will lead a British squad of 13 divers to
the Canadian and U.S. Grand Prix during the next week.
Waterfield, silver medallist off the 10m Platform in Melbourne,
will lend valuable experience to what on paper appears a young
team but is growing in confidence and ability with every major
meet.
And the standard of competition awaiting the British team
in Victoria, Canada this weekend, before the Fort Lauderdale,
USA meet a week later, will certainly provide a stern test
with the world's greatest divers on display.
The British squad will face competition from hosts Canada
as well as other nations such as Russia, China, the USA and
the Ukraine who have all celebrated success on the world and
Olympic stage in recent years.
For Waterfield (City of Sheffield), Sage (City of Sheffield)
and Indergaard (City of Leeds) the Grand Prix rounds will
provide further opportunity to dive against some of the most
talented divers in the world, to improve their own stock and
to try to get among the medals.
For the likes of 17-year-old Sarah Barrow (Plymouth Diving
Club), 16-year-old Claire Blencowe (City of Sheffield) and
20-year-old Ben Swain (City of Sheffield) the FINA Grand Prix
will aid their emergence among the world's diving elite.
The British contingent will be among over 100 of the world's
best divers attending the Saanich Commonwealth Place in Victoria
and the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Centre. The events are just
two of eight FINA Grand Prix.
