TOP YOUNG SWIMMERS IN ACTION IN SHEFFIELD
Great Britain's top young athletes will be in action this
weekend at the Disability Sport Events National Junior Swimming
Championships in Sheffield. More than 200 swimmers, aged from
10-18 years, will be in the pool to set personal best times
and make their mark in the disability swimming world. For
some it will be their first taste of national competition
while others will be focussed on posting good times ahead
of the World Championships later this year. Athletes from
Hungary and Israel are also set to compete. Paralympians Claire
Cashmore and David Hill (both Kelly College) will be looking
for strong performances as they prepare for the Visa Paralympic
World Cup in Manchester in just two months time. Cashmore,
who won two bronze medals in Athens in 2004, is looking forward
to her first major competition of the year.
"I've been very consistent in the water and I am the
fittest I've been in a while. I have increased the amount
of work I am doing in the gym, improving my strength. I've
also been working on my strokes, so this weekend I'm hoping
to go out and break the British Record in both the 50m freestyle
and the 100m backstroke." said Cashmore.
"The DSE Juniors has fitted well into my preparations
for the Paralympic World Cup. I haven't tapered for this event
but I feel in great shape. There are going to be some really
talented swimmers competing over the weekend so it will be
a really good event to kick-start the year."
