ENGLAND WISH THORPE A SPEEDY RECOVERY
England's swimming squad have sent best wishes to Ian Thorpe
while wishing him a speedy recovery from the illness that
has forced him to pull out of next week's Commonwealth Games
in Melbourne.
The 23-year-old superstar announced his withdrawal today
from the Australian effort after failing to recover in time
from bronchitis and a chest infection.
"All in the England swimming camp wish Ian (Thorpe)
a speedy recovery," explained England Head Coach Ian
Turner.
"We must remember the last time Ian swam in a Commonwealth
Games four years ago he set a new World Record in the 400m
Freestyle that still stands today.
"That's how good he is and both swimmers and spectators
will be disappointed that he can't race in Melbourne.
"We're all confident, however, that we'll see him again
in just 12 months time when we return to Melbourne for the
World Championships."
Despite the lack of Ian Thorpe at the Melbourne Games, Turner
is confident the swimming will be of the highest calibre with
more than enough to draw and entertain the crowds.
"Even though Ian will not be taking part in these Games,
the world can look forward to some spectacular racing with
numerous Olympic Champions, World Champions and World Record
holders taking part in what will be a fantastic show."
