WATERFIELD ADDS SILVER ON FINAL NIGHT

Peter Waterfield added a silver to Team England's diving medal tally on the final night of competition at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.

The defending champion couldn't quite edge home favourite Matthew Helm from the top spot in the 10m Platform and finished second with 1030.50 points. Helm finished with 1085.60 points and Alexandre Despatie of Canada took bronze with 1016.93 points.

Following his withdrawal from the 10m Synchro after a shoulder injury forced team mate Leon Taylor out of the pool, Waterfield was delighted to medal in his main event.

"The only difference between us tonight was a couple of entries that I missed, but that's the way it is sometimes," he said. "Matt was in terrific form and all credit must go to him. I felt good today and I dived very well to take silver. Matt was just that bit better on the day.

"It's been hard not competing in the synchro because of Leon's injury, but that's a great way to finish."

Team England's Gareth Jones (Southampton) and Callum Johnstone (City of Leeds) were also in action on the platform and finished in seventh and tenth with 847.95 and 748.55 points respectively.

In the women's 3m Springboard, all three of Team England's divers qualified for the final, but were out of the medals finishing in eighth, tenth and eleventh.

City of Sheffield's Hayley Sage, who qualified for the finals in tenth position, upped her game this evening to jump two places and finish in eighth with 578.70 points.

"That was nerve wracking but I enjoyed it," she said. "I think I dived well. My inward dive, which I can struggle with, went well for me and set me up for the night."

21-year-old Rebecca Gallantree progressed to the finals in third position, but a decision to attempt more difficult dives to challenge for a podium spot didn't pay off and the City of Leeds diver dropped to eleventh with 538.25 points, behind team mate Tandi Indergaard who finished tenth with 540.10 points.

"Coming into the final I decided to up the degree of difficulty of my dives because I wanted to fight for a medal," explained Gallantree. "It was a gamble and tonight it didn't pay off.

"It was a real experience competing against girls of that calibre, the standard was amazing. It will stand me in good stead for the future."
