THORPE WITHDRAWAL WOULD BE "SAD LOSS"
The possibility of Ian Thorpe's forced withdrawal from the
Commonwealth Games has been described as a real blow to the
Melbourne event by England Head Coach Ian Turner.
It follows news in Australia, where England are currently
undergoing their preparation camp, that Thorpe may be forced
to miss out on this month's Games following real uncertainty
over his health.
"It will be a sad loss to the Games if Ian Thorpe is
forced to withdraw due to illness but the main priority has
to be his health," said Turner.
"Obviously the meet will be poorer without his presence
as he's one of history's greatest swimmers and is Australia's
number one icon. It will be a real blow to miss that talent
and I'm sure everyone is hoping he recovers in time."
Thorpe, who has been unable to meet his usual training schedule,
has been struggling health-wise for some time but it is hoped
blood tests this week will identify the problem and treatment
required.
Australia's media has speculated that Thorpe will be tested
for glandular fever and chronic fatigue, among other conditions,
as it is believed he's been completely drained of energy in
the run up to the Games.
"All of the English swimming squad wish Ian (Thorpe)
a speedy recovery," said Turner. "If we don't get
the opportunity to compete against him this time around I'm
sure we'll see him fitter and healthier than ever at next
year's World Championships."
The Australian team will make a decision nearer the Games,
which start 15th March, on whether Thorpe will be fit enough
to take part.
