SEARCH BEGINS FOR OFFSHORE CENTRE RECRUITS

British Swimming is searching for the next generation of male swimmers to train and school at its Offshore Centre on the Gold Coast, Australia.

The Southport School has been home to a select group of young male swimmers since 2003 as athletes showing real potential utilise the impressive facilities while continuing their schooling.

Coach Chris Nesbit, who heads up the British programme at the school, will begin the selection process for the opportunity of a lifetime at next month's British Championships in Sheffield.

"We'll be looking to interview interested swimmers during April following the British Championships," said Nesbit, coach to former British World Champion Katy Sexton.

"Performances at the British trials will be looked at and we'll also take into account performances posted last summer."

Nesbit is excited at the prospect of this next group of recruits who will continue what is becoming a very fruitful relationship for British Swimming and Southport.

"This next generation of swimmers, due to start in January, will be a follow on from the good work that has been taking place here over the past couple of years.

"We are looking for swimmers, who are due to finish their GCSE's this summer and who plan to study for their A-Levels next year, to put themselves forward for this tremendous opportunity," said Nesbit.

"It's been going very well for the six lads that started in January this year. They've settled in very well both academically as well as in the pool. They've adjusted to their new environment and are reaping its benefits.

"The centre is really establishing itself as a major base for British Swimming. It will be integral for swimming in he lead up to the World Championships this time next year in Melbourne and of course ahead of the Olympic Games in 2008."

The school, which offers a 12-lane, outdoor, 50m pool as well as an outdoor, 25m facility, is currently hosting the preparation camp for England's swimmers in readiness for the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in two weeks time.

Swimmers interested in the opportunities offered by the Offshore Centre should forward all enquiries to Chris Nesbit on the Gold Coast at cnesbit@tss.qld.edu.au <mailto:cnesbit@tss.qld.edu.au>
