ALLY DISAPPOINTED WITH SPRINGBOARD RESULT
Team England's divers finished outside the medals tonight
as athletes fought for the titles in a strong field that included
World Champion Alexandre Despatie and world silver medallist
Loudy Tourky.
There was disappointment for Tony Ally after a series of
low-scoring dives pushed him out of medal contention in the
3m Springboard. The Sheffield diver, who won silver in the
same event in Manchester, finished sixth with 735 points.
"I'm totally disappointed with the end result,"
he admitted. "My preparation has been excellent. I made
too many mistakes tonight and I need to put it right if I
want a good result in the synchro. My back's been tight all
week and I've had treatment to make sure I'm ready."
Two of England's junior divers also made it through to the
final, with a pleasing result for Sheffield's Ben Swain, who
improved on his position after the preliminaries and finish
seventh with 705.80 points.
"I'm really enjoying myself here and that showed tonight
with some pleasing dives," he said. "I didn't get
off to a good start in the prelims but I pulled it together
for the final and am happy with my performance."
Gary Hunt of Southampton finished tenth with 614.20 points
at his first major games and is aiming to improve in his main
event, the Platform Synchro, this weekend.
In the women's Platform final, a trio of England's up-and-coming
divers finished outside the medals at their first major Games.
16-year-old Tonia Couch (Plymouth) finished seventh with 611.65
points, Stacie Powell of Southampton was just behind her England
team mate in eighth with 611.25 points and Sarah Barrow (Plymouth)
finished tenth with 484.10 points.
"I'm very pleased," said Couch. "I dived as
well as I could and that's all I can ask for. I will have
to keep consistent though in the future."
