CARRY LEADS WAY WITH HARD FOUGHT SILVER

Britain's David Carry displayed the kind of character and determination that saw him crowned Commonwealth Champion when he took the silver tonight at the Mare Nostrum in France.

The Loughborough University swimmer was in no shape to secure a medal, having to train through the meet, but came from behind to get among the podium places.

Carry nearly made it to the top step of the rostrum but finished just off gold medallist Craig Stevens from Australia who went into the final fully prepared to race.

Stevens touched in 3:50.20 just ahead of Carry in 3:50.38 and Nicolas Rostoucher of France was third in 3:50.80.

"That was another cracking race," said Carry. "I'm obviously not rested so am delighted to be so close at the finish considering Craig (Stevens) was prepared for this meet.

"This week is all about preparing for the Europeans. We're training throughout the meets and having to race up against it as many athletes from other nations are totally focused on swimming fast here."

Britain scored three medals on day one with silver also going to Loughborough University's Mel Marshall in the Women's 100m Backstroke.

The Freestyler showed the range of her talent to finish in 1:02.28 just behind Tayliah Zimmer of Australia in 1:01.78. Hannah McClean of New Zealand was third in 1:02.67.

"The backstroke is looking like a good event for me," said Marshall. "I'm pleased with how it went tonight although I'm far from rested and ready to race.

"I just wanted to see how I would go, considering all the training we're doing, and I actually felt good."

City of Edinburgh's Kirsty Balfour added to the medals with a bronze in the Women's 200m Breaststroke.

She finished behind World Record holder Leisel Jones of Australia in 2:24.99 and Sally Foster of Australia in 2:28.51 with a time of 2:29.09.

"I struggled over the first 150m but then it all felt right over the last length," said Balfour. "I'm tired due to training but it's gone so well for me and I'm looking forward to the Europeans when I'll be rested and ready to race."

Other results on day one of the Mare Nostrum from Canet included: Women's 100m Backstroke B Final - 1st Katy Sexton 1:04.74; Women's 800m Free B Final - 1st Ceri Unwin 8:48.71; Men's 50m Butterfly B Final - 1st Matt Bowe 25.09, 2nd David Leith 25.13; Women's 50m Breast B Final - 1st Kirsty Balfour 33.32; Men's 100m Backstroke B Final - 1st Matt Clay 57.47.
