CARRY IMPRESSES WITH GOLD DESPITE WORKLOAD

Britain signed off from the Canet leg of the Mare Nostrum tour with five medals on day-two of the meet with David Carry leading the way with victory in the Men's 200m Freestyle.

The Loughborough University swimmer touched in 1:49.15 ahead of Amaury Leveaux of France in 1:49.98 and Loughborough team mate Ross Davenport took the bronze in 1:50.02.

"I'm pleased with that swim," said Carry. "It's very close to my best time and I'm in heavy training at the moment.

"It's a great time for me especially given the fact I swam the 400m Freestyle yesterday and have had no rest coming into this meet.

"I feel I'm swimming very well at the moment and I'm excited about the European Championships next month when I'm rested and really in the kind of shape to swim fast."

Mel Marshall took the silver in the Women's 200m Freestyle as she tried to overhaul an impressive Annika Liebs of Germany.

Liebs finished in 1:58.52 just ahead of Marshall (Loughborough University) in 1:59.80 with Costa Rica's Claudia Poll taking third place in 2:00.74.

"I'm not particularly happy with that," said Marshall. "I just didn't feel like I got involved. I know I'm in no shape to go very fast, given the amount of training, but I felt I could have raced better."

Rebecca Adlington (Nova Centurion) was just outside her best time when she took the bronze in the Women's 400m Freestyle behind World Record holder and French golden girl Laure Manaudou.

Manaudou touched in 4:06.40 ahead of Camelia Potec of Romania in 4:11.16 and a delighted Adlington was third in 4:11.38.

"I'm very happy with that," said Adlington. "At this stage of my preparation for the Europeans, to go just outside my best after having swam over 70,000m in training this week is pretty impressive.

"I felt a bit lethargic in the warm up but just went for it in the final and it paid off."

Kirsty Balfour (City of Edinbugh) took her second medal of the meet in the Women's 100m Breaststroke. She took the bronze in 1:09.40 behind Australians Leisel Jones in 1:06.18 and Sally Foster in 1:09.33.

Other results from the B Finals on day two of Canet leg of the Mare Nostrum included: Women's 50m Backstroke - 2nd Georgia Davies in 30.83; Men's 800m Freestyle - 1st John Owen 8:17.63; Men's 200m Individual Medley - 1st Liam Tancock 2:05.24, 3rd Joe Roebuck 2:07.01; Women's 100m Breaststroke - 1st Kate Haywood 1:09.84; Women's 200m Backstroke - 2nd Georgia Davies 2:22.28, 3rd Zoe Hester 2:22.61; Women's 200m Freestyle - 3rd Terri Dunning 2:04.21; Men's 200m Freestyle - 1st Euan Dale 1:51.71.
