DIVING DUO COLLECT BRONZE IN THE BALEARICS
Divers Callum Johnstone and Charles Calvert have collected
Britain's first medals of the 2006 European Junior Swimming
and Diving Championships with bronze in the 3m Synchro.
The City of Leeds duo (both 15 years) performed in a tough
field in humid conditions at the Son Hugo pool in Palma de
Mallorca to finish third with 284.88 points - only a point
off silver medallists Oleksandr Gorshkovozov and Dmytro Mezheijskyy
of the Ukraine who scored 285.99 points. Russians Alexander
Gorshkov and Artem Lvov were named champions with an impressive
315.09 points.
In the girls 3m Synchro British pairing Claire Blencowe and
Jodie McGroarty (both City of Sheffield) finished just outside
the medals in fourth position. The club mates, who had only
a few weeks to prepare together for this competition after
Blencowe's usual partner Katie Hamilton (also City of Sheffield)
failed to recuperate from a knee operation in time, racked
up 250.11 points to place them well in the field of 12.
In the girls individual platform event, Southampton's Emily
Alderman put in a notable display to qualify for the finals
and improve on her preliminary ranking by two places. The
14-year-old finished fourth with 287.40 points, while British
team mate Aimee Walker (City of Leeds) also improved on her
position in the finals and finished sixth with 280.40 points.
