FLANAGAN DOUBLE SEALS TOP BOYS CLUB FOR BOROUGH OF KIRKLEES
Ryan FLANAGAN (Borough of Kirklees) touched home in a time
of 1:11.34 in the Boys 11yrs 100m Backstroke to add to the
200m Backstroke title he won on the first day of competition
in a night that saw his club claim the top boys club award
in the Cheestrings ASA National Age Group Championships 2006.
FLANAGAN edged out Matthew GRAHAM (City of Leeds) who recorded
a time of 1:11.60 to take silver despite being ahead at the
50m mark. Benjamin STOKES (Bracknell) finished 3rd in a time
of 1:12.61.
Grant HALSALL (Isle of Man ASA) and Adam JOHN (Plymouth Leander)
also joined FLANAGAN in recording a brace of backstroke victories.
HALSALL dominated the Boys 12yrs 100m Backstroke leading by
a clear length throughout and finishing with a time of 1:07.83.
However the battle for silver and bronze went down to the
wire as Zachary COURTNEY (Warrendar) pipped Jake COWTON (Darlington)
to take second place in times of 1:09.33 and 1:09.37 respectively.
JOHN, put in a strong performance in the Boys 14yrs Backstroke
to take the gold from Robert Parry (Abergele) in 1:01.42 and
Daniel STEPTON (Becontree) in 1:03.38 who took silver and
bronze.
Dan RUCKWOOD improved on his 200m Backstroke Bronze medal
to snatch gold in an exciting 13yrs Boys 100m Backstroke,
sneaking ahead of the fastest qualifier from the heats David
GREGORY (Newcastle St) to post a time of 1:02.48. GREGORY
finished in 1:02.67 in front of Donal DROUGHT (Swim Ireland)
who received a commemorative medal. Matthew VERDON (Warrington)
took bronze in 1:04.32.
GREGORY had better fortunes in the 13yrs Boys 400m IM as
he worked hard to forge a 5-metre lead by the 350m mark, to
finish in 4:52.16. Matthew PARKS (Swim Trafford) took silver
in a time of 4.54.42 ahead of Timothy ALMOND (Warrington)
who clocked 4:58.69 to push out Joshua FOWLER (Portsmouth
Northsea).
Matthew JOHNSON (City of Leeds) and Jordan THEAKER (Gallica
SC) both added the 400m IM golds to those won in the 200m
IM events earlier in the week. JOHNSON streaked ahead in the
Boys 11yrs to finish in a time of 5:10.98, with Ryan FLANAGAN
(Borough of Kirklees) taking silver in 5:16.41 and Ethan SLOAN-DENNISON
(City of Glasgow) taking bronze in 5:29.36.
THEAKER from eventual Top Club winners Gallica, lead at every
turn in the Boys 12yrs 400m IM to take the gold in 5:02.52,
this time ahead of Joshua QUINTON (City of Birmingham) in
5:12.89 and Daniel JOHNSON (Middlesbrough) in 5:16.37 who
took silver and bronze.
Fastest qualifier from the heats, Andrew WINSPEAR (Borough
of Stockton) was victorious in the Boys 14yrs 400m IM, with
a strong breaststroke leg taking him to the 300m mark in first
place. WINSPEAR touched home in a time of 4:45.25 ahead of
Adam JOHN (Plymouth Leander) who added silver in 4:47.83 to
take his tally of medals to three. Tom ALLEN (City of Chester)
edged out Grant SAGE (Thornbury) to take bronze by 0.17 of
a second in a time of 4.48.74.
In the 800m Freestyle events, Jessica THIELMAN helped Newburn
to the Top Girls Club title with gold in the 12yrs age group.
THEILMAN posted a time of 9:13.65 to force Sophie WARD (Gallica
SC) in 9:18.08 into silver and Sian MORGAN (City of Bradford)
in 9.21.94 into the bronze medal position.
Ellis JACKSON (St Felix School) dominated the Girls 11yrs
800m freestyle to top off an impressive week at the championships.
JACKSON took gold in a time of 9:38.27; with Mollie VINCENT
(Portsmouth Northsea) finishing second in 9.45.26 and Lauren
QUIGLEY (City of Manchester) edging out her team mate Katie
COOPER to post a time of 9:56.77.
JACKSON and VINCENT were both back in action in the final
of the Girls 200m Butterfly. JACKSON clocked 2:30.47 to take
gold ahead of Fiona DONNELLY'S (Derventio Excel) 2:33.08,
with VINCENT settling for bronze in 2:33.57.
Aimee WILLMOTT (Middlesbrough) took her medal tally to five,
with an impressive swim in the Girls 13 yrs 800m Freestyle.
Emma GRAHAM (City of Leeds) was unable to claim that elusive
gold medal in addition to her 2 silver and 1 bronze from earlier
in the week, taking another silver in a time of 9:13.31 with
Kayleigh DAWSON (Newburn) snatching bronze in 9:15.55.
Gallica SC made it a Boys 800m Freestyle one-two in the 14yrs
age category with Robert HARRISON and Joshua WALSH clocking
home in 8:45.65 and 8:47.73 respectively. Adam SHAW (Bolton
Metro) took bronze in 8:48.78.
Sophie WARD added to the Gallica haul, with a confident swim
in the Girls 12yrs 200m Butterfly finishing in 2:22.91 in
front of Kerys O'SULLIVAN (Borough of Hillingdon) in 2:26.19
and Gallica team mate Sarah LUCAS who receive the bronze in
a time of 2:30.05.
In the Girls 13 yrs 200m Butterfly, an aggressive swim from
Lauren Chappel (Barnet Copthall) saw her take the gold in
2:21.69, a five second improvement on her qualifying time
from the heats. Rebecca WETTEN (St Felix School) took the
silver in 2:23.92 just in front of Emma GRAHAM (City of Leeds)
who clocked 2:24.70 to take bronze.
James YOUNG (Kingston Royals) finished approximately 18 seconds
ahead of the nearest competitor in the Boys 13yrs 800m Freestyle.
YOUNG was out on his own, for much of the event, leaving Alex
JESSOP (Barnet Copthall) in 9:09.55 and Keiron PIPER (Thanet
Swim) in 9:10.01 to fight for the silver and bronze.
YOUNG notched up another Freestyle gold in the Boys 13yrs
200m event, claiming the title in 2:02.20. Just 0.02 of a
second separated Matthew PARKS (Swim Trafford) in 2:04.14
and Craig FREEMAN (Ferndown) in 2:04.16 for the silver and
bronze medal positions.
Matthew JOHNSON (City of Leeds) took his second gold of the
night in the Boys 11yrs 200m Freestyle achieving a time of
2:12.39 ahead of Ryan FLANAGAN (Borough of Kirklees) and Harry
Payne (Borough of Southend) who took silver and bronze in
2:13.27 and 2:16.23 respectively.
Turkey's Ediz YILDIRIMER recorded the fastest time in the
Boys 12 yrs 200m Freestyle to receive a commemorative medal
with Adam ROWE (Stafford Apex) taking the gold in a time of
2:07.27. Jordan THEAKER (Gallica SC) added silver to his bronze
in the 400m IM to post a time of 2:07.96 in front of Jake
COWTON (Darlington) in 2:09.00.
After missing out on a medal in the Boys 14 yrs 400m IM,
Grant SAGE (Thornbury) took the 200m Freestyle event by a
whisker in 1:59.32, forcing Alexander JONES (Tiger Sharks)
into second place with a time of 1:59.50. Alexander JAMESON
(St Bedes School) took bronze in a time of 2:00.54.
In the final individual girls events of the meet, Naomi VIDES
(Ferndown) took the Girls 11yrs 100m Breaststroke, in a time
of 1:18.12, however only a fraction of a second separated
Sophie SMITH'S (City of Leicester) 1:20.37, Sycerika MCMAHON'S
(Ireland) 1:20.47 and Mollie VINCENT'S (Portsmouth Northsea)
1:20.54. Smith and Vincent took the silver and bronze, with
McMahon receiving a commemorative medal.
In the Girls 12 yrs 100m Breaststroke, Lucy BUDMIR hung on
for the gold in 1:16.69 despite the best efforts of a determined
Jodie WILLIS (Rushmoor Royals) who finished in 1:16.82 ahead
of Carla READ (City of Leicester) in 1:17.62 who took bronze.
Chloe FRANCIS (Basildon) lost out on the last individual
gold medal of the Championships, as Rachel Gardner (City of
Leeds) posted 1:14.35 ahead of Francis' 1:14.81. A time of
1:15.77 was enough for Gabriella HEARD (Swim Swansea) to capture
bronze.
In the Girls Open 400m Medley the City of Sheffield took
gold on home turf in a time of 4:35.55. Despite leading after
the Breaststroke leg, Millfield took the silver in 4:39.85,
nearly a second ahead of City of Leicester after a sparkling
Freestyle leg took them from 5th place to bronze medal position
in a time of 4:40.80
The Boys Open 400m Medley produced the finish of the night
with City of Coventry's John NOBLE and Plymouth Leander's
Alistair MACLEAN battling it out over an electric final 50m.
City of Coventry snatched a fingertip victory in 4:17.50 just
0.2 of a second ahead of Leander in 4:17.52, with Bracknell
and Wokingham taking bronze in 4:20.06.
