TRIPLE GOLD FOR CITY OF LEEDS JOHNSON

Matthew Johnson from City of Leeds won three gold medals on day two of the Cheestrings ASA National Age Group Championships dominating the 11yrs group.

His first came in the 400m Freestyle when he finished in 4:36.49 over 6 seconds clear of silver medallist Harry PAYNE (Bo Southend) who finished in 4:43.01. The bronze medal was a close call but Bruno BANKS (Rushmoor Royals) just edged out Tom BIELICH (Io Man ASA) to claim the last medal in 4:47.19.

The 100m Butterfly brought his second gold. This time it was a closer race as Johnson touched in 1:10.20. Luke WOOLSTENCROFT (Stockport Metro) finished in a time of 1:11.04 pushing last night's double gold medallist Ryan FLANAGAN (Bo Kirklees) into bronze with 1:11.55.

Gold number three (fourth of the meet) for Johnson was in the 200m Breaststroke. With little to split them at the 150m mark Johnson, Bradley KEMP (Hants North) and James CLARK (Swindon Dolphins) had to dig deep for their final places. Johnson's time was 2:53.75 as he and Kemp, who took sliver in 2:53.95, edged away from Clark who had to settle for the bronze in 2:55.15.

Today's golden girls were Aimee WILMOTT (Middlesborough) and Ellis JACKSON (St Felix Sch) who both took two titles each.

Jackson won gold in the 11 Yrs 200m Backstroke with a time of 2:27.47 with Fiona DONNELLY (Derventio) taking silver behind her in 2:28.90, just like last night, in the 400m freestyle. Mollie VINCENT (Portsmouth N) took the bronze in 2:29.11.

It was the same 1,2,3 in the 11 Yrs 200m IM as Jackson snatched the gold in 2:29.28 ahead of Donnelly with silver in 2:29.49 and Vincent with bronze in 2:30.97. This takes Jackson's gold tally to three.

The same events in the 13yrs category delivered gold for Wilmott. An excellent time of 2:18.71 was a five second margin over silver medallist Kathryn WILLIS (Rushmoor Royals) who touched in 2:23.00. Bronze went to Holly CAMPBELL (Millfield) who finished in 2:25.14.

In the 13 Yrs 200m IM Wilmott's victory was as convincing as she won gold in 2:22.31 ahead of Lauren CHAPPLE (Barnet Copt) who recorded 2:24.94 in front of Rachel GARDENER (Co Leeds) and Grainne MURPHY (Swim Ireland) who touched in a dead heat for the bronze in 2:25.86.

Double medallist from yesterday, Sophie WARD (Gallica) won two more today. She was the only athlete in the Girls 12 Yrs 100m Freestyle to go under the minute mark with 59. Holly RALFE (Co Canterbury) and Jessica THIELMANN (Newburn) finished in 1:00.40 and 1:01.21 to take silver and bronze respectively.

In the Girls 12 Yrs 200m IM it was Thielmann's turn to take top honours touching first in 2:26.72 to take her second gold of the meet. Anne BOCHMANN (UEA Norwich) claimed the silver in 2:27.00 just ahead of Ward who had to settle for bronze in 2:27.43.

Bouchmann wasn't to finish the day without claiming her own gold in the Girls 12 Yrs 200m Backstroke. Her wining time was 2:23.98 after she turned up the heat in the last 50m. Holly RALFE and Bethan DAVIS (Bridgend City) battled in the last few metres with Ralfe seizing the silver in 2:26.06 just ahead of Davis's 2:26.14 bronze.
Yesterday's 400m freestyle bronze medallist Kathryn WOOLSTON-THOMAS was able to strike gold in the Girls 11 Yrs 100m Freestyle when she touched in 1:01.79. Another dead heat saw silvers presented to Charlotte DICKINSON (Wigan BEST) and Sophie SMITH (Co Leicester) who recorded 1:01.97.

Two swimmers went under sixty seconds in the Girls 13 Yrs 100m Freestyle. A great swim from Rebecca TURNER (Co Sheffield), in her home pool, brought her home the gold in 58.81. A 59.77 gave Emma GRAHAM (Co Leeds) the silver and 1:00.20 from Lucy TITCHIN (Bath Univ) was good enough for the bronze.

Ediz YILDIRIMER from Turkey won a commemorative gold in the Boys 12 Yrs 400m Freestyle with an impressive swim seven seconds ahead of the rest of the field. He touched in 4:20.27. The Gold went to Jordan THEAKER (Gallica SC) in 4:27.06 with a close finish in silver and bronze places for Callum MURPHY (Plymouth Leander) and Samuel DAVIES (Stockport Metro) who recorded 4:32.09 and 4:32.38 respectively.

Gold and silver in the 12 Yrs 200m Breaststroke went north of the border as Sam GEORGE (South Aberdeen) never looked in doubt of taking the gold as he finished in 2:43.08, five seconds in front of Craig BENSON (Livingston) who recorded 2:48.31 ahead of Aaron LYNCH's (Stowmarket) 2:50.02.

Only .01 ahead of Lewis COLEMAN (Ipswich) his 2:30.49 took him to the top of the podium with 2:30.50 giving Coleman the silver whilst Jamie SHIELDS (Bracknell) has a close finish with Turkey's Timur DELLALOGLU but hung on to touch in 2:32.60 for bronze.
