JOHN SETS BRITISH AGE GROUP RECORD ON FIRST DAY OF CHEESTRINGS
CHAMPIONSHIPS
Adam John from Plymouth Leander set a new British Age Group
Record of 2:08.72, over a second faster than the previous
mark, in the boys 14yrs 200m backstroke on the first day of
competition at the Cheestrings ASA National Age Group Championships
2006. It was also a one two for Plymouth Leander as team-mate
Calum JARVIS took the silver in 2:16.51 and in bronze position
was Joshua CROWTHER (Newburn) in 2:16.79
Swimmers from 39 cubs won medals but the top medallist of
the day was Ryan Flanningan (Bo Kirklees) who three medals.
His first win came in the Boys 11 Yrs 100m Freestyle. His
winning time of 1:02.27 was ahead of Tom BIELICH (Io Man ASA)
who took silver in 1:03.80 and Bruno BANKS (Rushmoor Royals)
who took bronze in 1:04.36.
Flannigan's second gold came in the 11 Yrs 200m Backstroke
with a winning time of 2:30.34. Taking silver was Miles GARNER
(UEA Norwich) and bronze was Matthew JOHNSON (Co Leeds) who
finished in 2:31.82 and 2:34.17 respectively.
His third medal of the night was a silver in the Boys 11
Yrs 200m IM as Matthew JOHNSON turned the table to take the
gold in 2:30.54 just ahead of Flanagan's 2:30.66 and James
CLARK (Swindon Dolphins) finish for the bronze in 2:37.79
Newburn took a medal in each age group of the girls 400m
freestyle getting their Championships off to a great start.
In the 11yrs age group it was a bronze. Gold went to Ellis
JACKSON of St Felix School in 4:38.33, the first national
age group medal for the club. Leading at the final turn she
held on to finish ahead of silver medallist Fiona DONNELLY
(Derventio) who touched in 4:41.19 in front of Kathryn WOOLSTON-THOMAS
(Newburn) who won bronze in 4:41.89.
In the 12 years group it was gold for Newburn as Jessica
THIELMANN held onto her lead at the final turn to claim the
gold in 4:27.46. Gallica SC's Sophie WARD fought hard and
won silver in 4:28. 57 ahead of Anne BOCHMANN (UEA Norwich)
who claimed bronze in 4:29.83.
Newburn also took a bronze in the 13yrs 400m freestyle courtesy
of Kayleigh DAWSON who finished in 4:27.35. An exciting battle
right to the last 25metres, saw Rebecca TURNER (Co Sheffield)
and Emma GRAHAM (Co Leeds) just started to edge in front.
Turner was the victor on the touch taking gold in 4:25.25
with Graham finishing for silver in 4:25.45.
Adding to her silver in the 400m freestyle Sophie Ward went
one better in the girls 12 Yrs 100m butterfly with a gold
medal time of 1:06.16. Silver and bronze went to Kerys O'SULLIVAN
(Bo Hillingdon) in 1:06.85 whilst Bryony CAMPBELL (Millfield)
finished in 1:07.95 for the silver.
In the other girls 100m butterfly finals Fiona DONNELLY (Derventio)
took the gold in the 11yrs in a time of 1:07.91 well ahead
of Sophie SMITH (Co Leicester) who won silver in1:09.08 and
Ellis JACKSON (St Felix Sch) who took bronze and her second
medal of the day in 1:09.62
In the girls 13 Yrs 100m Butterfly it was Lauren CHAPPLE
(Barnet Copt) who triumphed for gold recording 1:04.74 whilst
Jackson's teammate from St Felix School Rebecca WETTEN won
silver in 1:05.61. Catriona BRUCE (Bo Stockton) won bronze
in 1:06.56.
The City of Leeds had a second gold medallist in Rachel GARDENER
who won the girls 13 Yrs 200m Breaststroke in a time of 2:37.70.
It was a close run thing but she got the better of her opposition
Aimee WILLMOTT (Middlesboro) who finished with the silver
in 2:38.12 and it was Francesca MARR (Bo Hillingdon) who took
the bronze in 2:38.40, her club's second of the day.
In the other age groups of the Girls Yrs 200m Breaststroke
Naomi VIDES (Ferndown) won gold in the 11yrs in 2:47.71 whilst
Mollie VINCENT (Portsmouth N) finished in 2:49.78 and Sophie
SMITH (Co Leicester) in 2:52.73 to take the silver and bronze.
In the 12 Yrs group the winner was Hannah SCHULZ (Exeter
City) who recorded 2:41.68 as she held her nerve to win despite
a strong challenge from Lucy BUDIMIR (Harrogate) who touched
for silver in 2:43.26. Jodie WILLIS (Rushmoor Royals) claimed
bronze in 2:45.02.
City of Birmingham's Dan Ruckwood was also a double medallist
but he could only win silver in the boys 13 Yrs 100m Freestyle
behind Adam INGLEDEW (Mid Beds) who won in 56.04. Ruckwood
recorded 56.48 ahead of Turkey's Bertug COSKUN who was presented
a commemorative bronze for his 56.67 leaving James YOUNG (Kingston
Royals) as the next fastest in 56.80 with the bronze.
Ruckwood couldn't improve on the silver and it was a bronze
behind David GREGORY (Newcastle St) in the Boys 13 Yrs 200m
Backstroke. Gregory recorded 2:14.02 well ahead of silver
medallist Matthew PARKS (SwimTrafford) in 2:17.57 and Ruckwood's
2:17.75.
The Boys 12 Yrs 200m Backstroke also saw a clear winner in
Grant HALSALL (Io Man ASA) who finished in 2:22.70, nearly
3 seconds ahead of Mitchell ADSHEAD (Chase) who touched in
2:25.41 and Joshua QUINTON (Co Birmingham) who took the last
medal in 2:26.51.
In the boys 12 yrs 100m freestyle Jake COWTON (Darlington)
won gold in 59.05 with Aaron LYNCH's (Stowmarket) 59.3 earning
him a silver and James PROLE (TauntonDeane) taking bronze
with a time of 59.47.
In the boys 14 Yrs 100m Freestyle it was Bradley MOORHOUSE
(Black Lion) who was the victor in 54.34 ahead of Alexander
JAMESON (St Bedes Sch) and Robert PARRY (Abergele) who finished
in 54.57 and 55.16 respectively.
The Boys 13 Yrs 200m IM saw the closest finish for all three
medals with just 0.73 splitting the medallists. The touch
went to James YOUNG (Kingston Royals) in 2:19.22 just ahead
of
David GREGORY (Newcastle St) who this time had to settle for
silver after his 200m backstroke gold. His 2:19.84 was just
enough to push Matthew PARKS (SwimTrafford) into bronze as
he finished in 2:19.95 for his second medal.
In the Boys 12 Yrs 200m IM Grant HALSALL (Io Man ASA) couldn't
make it a second gold as Jordan THEAKER's (Gallica SC) gold
in 2:25.20 was too strong for his time of 2:30.23 so it was
silver instead ahead of Ricky JONES (Hatfield) who won bronze
in 2:30.49.
Although Grant SAGE (Thornbury) turned first on the last
50m in the Boys 14 Yrs 200m IM he couldn't maintain the lead
and was beaten for the gold by Robert PARRY (Abergele). Parry
recorded 2:14.83 adding to his bronze in the 100m freestyle,
with Sage's 2:15.43 good enough to take silver ahead of Lewis
COLEMAN (Ipswich) in 2:16.47.
The girls 4 x 100m freestyle relay gold went to Gallica ahead
of City of Sheffield and Newburn. Whilst in the boys it was
University of Bath ahead of Ipswich and Stockport Metro.
