DAVIES MEDALS AT LEN 10K CUP
Teenager Philippa Davies (Swim Swansea) has won bronze for
Great Britain at only her second outing in open water - at
the LEN 10k Cup in Vassiviere, France.
The 18-year-old, whose first foray into distance swimming
was at the British 5k Championships in Sheffield in April,
and who first competed in open water just last month at the
LEN Cup in Seville, put in an awesome display to win bronze
in 2h7.2.93.
Cathy Dietrich of France and Spain's Xenia Lopez made an
early break to form an unassailable lead which led them to
gold and silver in 2h3:04.80 and 2h06:07.88 respectively.
Davies and British team mate Paula Woods (Ealing) held with
the chasing pack and it was Davies who touched home first
in the group for the final podium spot.
Recently out of retirement, Woods finished 11th in 2h09:27.68,
while Charlotte Creager of Barnet Copthall, who swam her first
ever 10k open water event at the weekend, finished a credible
22nd in a field of 36 in 2h18:30.90.
In the men's event, David Proud (Durham Aquatics) and Jamie
Forrest (City of Glasgow) fell off the leading pack at the
8k mark and touched home in 15th and 16th in 1h58:12.35 and
1h58.26.62 respectively, and 17-year-old Matthew Vyse of Hatfield
finished 23rd in 2h05:12.73.
