BRAVE ENGLAND FACE BRONZE MEDAL PLAY-OFF
England women almost caused an upset in their Commonwealth
Water Polo Championship semi-final against hosts and reigning
champions Australia in Perth.
Earlier in the week, Australia won the encounter between
the two 16-2, so the improvement today by England, due to
a change of tactics and heavy pressure, worried the Aussies
who eventually won 12-5.
England will now face New Zealand in a play-off for the bronze
medal tomorrow after the Kiwis went down 18-7 in their semi-final
to World Championship bronze medallists Canada.
The Canadian men's team earned a repeat shot at the tile
with a bulldozing 18-7 victory over New Zealand while Australia
overcame some early stout resistance from South Africa for
an 18-8 win in the men's event.
In the play-offs for fifth place, England men beat Wales
16-1 and South Africa women defeated Scotland 12-5.
