ENGLAND'S SWIMMERS ARRIVE ON GOLD COAST
England's swimmers arrived safely at their holding camp on
the Gold Coast, Australia where they will spend the next two
weeks finalising preparations for next month's Commonwealth
Games.
Within hours of touching down in Brisbane on Monday morning
the team were in the water at their training base - The Southport
School - as they sought to rid themselves of a journey that
took well over 24 hours.
England's swimming contingent will train at the private school
until they depart for Melbourne, home to the 2006 Commonwealth
Games, on 12th March. The Games themselves start on 15th March.
While at Southport the swimmers will be able to use the school's
12-lane, 50m, outdoor pool that is currently being warmed
by temperatures above 30 Celsius at the tail end of an Australian
summer.
Southport is used by British Swimming as an offshore centre
for developing promising male athletes as well as hosting
warm-weather training camps. It will provide perfect acclimatisation
for athletes as they make the change from harsh British winter
to such a contrasting environment.
