DEFENDING CHAMPS CRUISE INTO FINAL
The first day of finals at the British Club Championships
2006 saw some exciting skills from the country's elite water
polo stars but few surprises.
In the first men's semi-final Bristol came back from a 5-6
deficit at half time to secure their final spot. In beating
a lacking-in-numbers Rotherham 10-9, Bristol set up a final
meeting with titleholders, Lancaster.
Favourites and five-time Champions Lancaster beat a young
Cheltenham side 10-3 in the second semi. The men from the
North West used their vast experience in maintaining a stubborn
defence, which became the difference between the two sides.
Bristol and England star Craig Figes said, "Lancaster
are playing very well. I can see a couple of key incidents
being the difference between the two sides in the final".
In the women's semis defending champions Sheffield stormed
to a 15-6 win over Manchester. Sheffield's Fran Leighton,
voted GB outstanding player at the recent Commonwealth Games
tournament, stood out as one to watch in the final. The second
semi saw Liverpool book their final place with a 7-2 victory
over London side Hammersmith Penguin.
RESULTS:
Men
Rotherham 9 v 10 Bristol
