OLYMPIC CHAMPION COMPETES IN BRITISH DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Olympic Champion Thomas Bimis will be travelling to Manchester
this weekend to compete against the best talent in British
diving for the 2007 GB Diving championships
Teams from Poland, Greece, the Czech Republic and Saudi Arabia
will be making the journey to England to gain valuable experience
on the run up to next years World Championship.
Bimis, who claimed gold in the 3m synchronised springboard
event in Athens, is part of the Greek team and will be up
against British stalwarts Tony Ally and Peter Waterfield at
this weekends championships.
British Diving Performance Director Steve Foley is looking
forward to welcoming the teams to Manchester.
"The foreign teams will give our athletes an extra push
to succeed," said Foley "They know they are competing
against teams that may be in the World Championships and so
will want to raise the level of their dives."
Foley believes the foreign competitors will give the British
divers an added incentive.
"Thomas Bimis will certainly add an extra level of competitiveness
to our championships," he said. "He will be competing
in the 3m event against some good athletes including Peter
Waterfield and Tony Ally."
He is also looking forward to the return of Olympic silver
medallist Leon Taylor.
"This year will be a good test for Leon and Peter Waterfield.
The expectation for success is high and it will be good to
see Leon's performance after his shoulder injury.
"This really is the countdown to Beijing and we will
be looking to see how the Grand Prix events earlier in the
season have benefited our divers. We will be sending a team
to the World Championships in Melbourne and hope a number
of our athletes will gain Olympic qualification.
"We only have two qualifiers left so we need to raise
our game to ensure that as many divers as possible qualify
for the Worlds."
