SHEFFIELD DUO WIN WORLD DIVING BRONZE
City of Sheffield diving duo Jodie McGroarty and Claire Blencowe
picked up Britain's first medal of the World Junior Diving
Championships on the final day of action in Kuala Lumpur.
The pair, who finished fourth in the 3m Synchro at the European
Junior Championships just last month, went one better on the
world stage to win bronze with 257.37 points.
After taking the lead on the third dive, McGroarty (17) and
Blencowe (16) slipped two places in the final two rounds with
Chinese pairing He Zi and Jia Dongjin taking the title in
276.00 points. Ukrainians Mariya Voloschenko and Anna Pysmenska
won silver with 270.24 points.
The girls' springboard bronze was a fitting end to the Championships
which saw members of the British team reach six finals and
finish 11th on the medal table.
City of Leeds' partners Charles Calvert and Callum Johnstone
were just outside of medal contention in the boys' 3m Synchro
as they finished fourth with 270.54 points. China's Wang Yong
and Lin Jin won gold with 321.00 points, Russia's Artem Lvov
and Alexander Gorshkov won silver in 319.38 points and Christian
Picker and Patrick Hausding of Germany were bronze medallists
with 282.30 points.
17-year-old Sarah Barrow (Plymouth) was sixth in the girls
A Platform and 15-year-old Aimee Walker (City of Leeds) was
10th in the girls B Platform, while Kyle Prior, also City
of Leeds, made finals in both the Platform and 1m Springboard
events finishing in 11th and ninth place respectively.
With Beijing less than two years away, China dominated the
medals in Kuala Lumpur - winning nine gold from a possible
14 and collecting 20 medals in total. The next placed team
was the Ukraine who picked up one gold, three silver and two
bronze medals.
